Perplexity first gained attention a few years ago with its response engine, which behaved very similarly to ChatGPT but had internet access (something ChatGPT and other LLMs didn’t at the time). The company then launched an AI-centric web browser called Comet for desktop users. Now, that same browser is available on Android.

“Building an AI-first browser has required deliberate work for each OS and every form factor,” Perplexity said. “We didn’t want to just force a desktop experience onto mobile. Instead, Perplexity has redesigned the mobile web browser for the new age of the internet.”

Comet on Android has several unique features that differentiate it from browsers like Chrome and Firefox. One key feature you’ll find yourself using frequently is a personal AI assistant, accessible with a single click, allowing you to ask questions and give it tasks. Comet Assistant also includes extended inference, so you can see exactly what it’s doing and even intervene when needed.

Not only is the assistant easily accessible, but it also comes with a voice mode, allowing you to chat with it and find information across all open tabs. Traditional web browsers haven’t even come close to offering this level of AI integration, but given the work Perplexity is doing, they may be pushed in that direction.

Another useful feature is the ability to aggregate information from all open tabs, not just the pages you have open. This helps you extract information from pages faster, improving your productivity. Finally, the browser helps you avoid spam and pop-up ads with a built-in ad blocker. If you trust a website, like Neowin, simply add it to your whitelist so your favorite sites can stay accessible.

Unlike other browsers that tend to explicitly call upon their AI assistants, Comet’s assistant always works in the background to block distractions and assist with tasks. Comet can remember open tabs and current tasks, providing quick, context-sensitive answers or summaries directly on any webpage without switching applications. It can also act as your personal assistant, handling a variety of tasks, including research, simplification, shopping, or learning.
